It's one of the strangest – and most unwieldy – thefts we've
ever come across. Police in a small western Pennsylvania town are
searching for a missing steel bridge.
Salvaging scrap metal is nothing new. But most thieves go for easy
targets like piping, gutters and even manhole covers. A 50-foot-long
bridge made of impossibly heavy steel doesn't quite fit into that same
category. But some enterprising criminals managed to haul away the
bridge from North Beaver Township, Pa., about 50 miles northeast of
Pittsburgh.
The 40-ton bridge, tucked away on an access road at an industrial
park in the sparsely populated area near the Ohio border, isn't very
heavily trafficked. But its disappearance is obvious, not least because
it's worth an estimated $100,000.
The most likely scenario is that the thieves used a blowtorch to cut
apart the bridge and haul it away. New Castle Development, who owns the
property, remembers the bridge being there on Sept. 27. But sometime in
the past 10 days, it disappeared. New Castle Development spokesman Gary
Bruce told WFMJ, "I thought that with the rain it got washed away."
But that's quite a tall tale for the bridge that's been standing
since the early 1900s. The bridge was lifted off its foundation, marks
visible where the metal was ripped from its supports. "Its old beams are
probably hundreds and hundreds of pounds per foot," Robert Obed, who
lives in the area,
told WTAE.
But metal thefts aren't uncommon in the area. Coincidentally enough,
the bridge was recently closed because of copper thefts nearby.

Scope of work:
Injection of dead cracks with low viscosity 2 components epoxy resin in order to repair the concrete structures.
PREPARATION FOR INJECTION WORK
- 14mm holes must be drilled along the crack path between 200 – 300 mm centres. The holes must be deep enough to receive the ‘metal pipe sleeves’ (approx. 20mm)
- Insert Sika ‘metal pipe sleeves’ into all the holes and epoxy into position using Sikadur 731
- Clean the concrete surface adjacent to the crack with a wire brush or sandpaper.
- Wipe down the concrete with a clean rag to remove any dust and loosely adhering particles.
- The cleaned surface is then sealed using Sikadur 731 applied by a spatula or trowel.
CRACK INJECTION
- Following the curing of the Sikadur 731 (minimum of 12 hours at 30oC) the epoxy injection can commence.
- Starting from one side or the lowest point of the crack a Sika ‘nipple’ is screwed into the first pipe sleeve and Sikadur 752 injected into the crack until the epoxy is seen to ooze from the adjacent pipe sleeve, this pipe sleeve is then sealed with a nipple, continue to inject the current port until refusal (epoxy resin can not be injected more) and then start the injection of the adjacent port and so on. This procedure is continued in the sequence indicated until all have been completed.
- Beginning at the first nipple filled, the nipple is removed and checked for incomplete filling. If any of the pipe sleeves are found to be incompletely filled, the injection of Sikadur 752 must recommence from the previous pipe sleeve to the one found incomplete until full and the nipple replaced. This checking process is continued (without interruption) along the crack until all have been checked.
- After a curing time of 12 hours the sleeve and nipples are trimmed off with an angle grinder or other suitable equipment.

Down through the ages, mandkind has used the natural and renewable power of wind for windmills. A windmill is a machine that use sails or blades to harness the kinetic energy of wind and convert it to mechanical energy to grind grain and coin, saw timber, and draw up water for irrigation and water supply.
The first practical windmill dates from 9th-century found in Persia and was likely a vertical shaft with six to twelves sails. Windmills of this type were used throughout much of Islamic world, and introduced to Europe through Islamic Spain. In China, a similar of vertical shaft windmill with rectangular blades was used in the 13th century.
A difference design was introduced in northern France in the 12th century that became the standard for Europe. A horizontal shaft was mounted to an upright body and buck that could be rotated to face the direction of the wind.
By the end of 13th century, windmills mostly were made of brick with a timber cap that rotated rather than the body of the mill. This made it possible to build windmills that were much taller, allowing sails to be larger, making it possible to work even in low winds.
A small auxiliary set of sails, called a fantail, at the rear of the cap helped keep the sails facing the direction of the wind. With the industrial revolution, windmills became less important sd primary industrial energy force and were largely replaced by steam and the internal combustion engines. They did experience a brief heyday during and after World War II due to the lack of fuel, electricity and other means to run machines. In Holland, about 100,000 were in operation by end of the 19th century. Today, there are bout 1000. In the US, where windmills were used on farms in the Midwest to pump water, there were about six million windmills by the end of the 19th century of which only 15,000 remain.
The modern generation of windmills, more properly called wind turbines, are used to generate electricity. The largest turbine can generate uo to 6MW of power.
